Cobalt and Copper Kitchen: Balancing Beauty, Function & Family | Custom Kitchen Remodel in Tucson, Arizona
Designing a kitchen isn’t just about choosing cabinets and countertops—it’s about how a space feels, functions, and brings people together.
This recent Tucson renovation—the Cobalt & Copper Kitchen—is a perfect example of how thoughtful design and craftsmanship can completely transform the way a home lives.
The original kitchen had lots of great features, but like many lived-in spaces, it had started to feel a little tight, and the finishes no longer matched the homeowners’ evolving style. The goal was to rework the layout for better flow, update the materials, and create something that felt both grounded and fresh—with room for the family and for entertaining.
Working closely with the homeowners, Chad and Jennifer Garner, Williams West’s own in-house interior designer, created a plan that honored the spirit of the home while introducing intentional design, beautiful lighting, and more room to gather and cook. The result is a warm, personal space that reflects the people who live in it—and invites others in.
Before a single cabinet was ordered or wall removed, Jennifer presented the homeowners with several distinct design concepts to help clarify the direction of the project. This early phase is a key part of our process—it allows clients to explore different layouts, styles, and ideas before locking anything in. For this kitchen, it gave the homeowners confidence in their decisions and ensured that every detail, from the flow of the space to the final finishes, felt intentional. Whether you have a clear vision or don’t know where to begin, having visual concepts makes the process feel less overwhelming—and helps ensure the final result truly reflects your needs.
Jennifer and Chad often team up on major projects, bringing together Chad’s building experience and Jen’s eye for aesthetics. Their collaborative process helps clients make design decisions that not only look great, but also function well and fit within a thoughtful budget. Of course, we’re happy to work alongside your own designer or architect, too—we’re here to support your vision, no matter where you’re starting.
This project wasn’t just a cosmetic update; it was a full-scale transformation. To improve flow and functionality, we reworked the kitchen footprint, removed walls, and opened up sightlines to let the space breathe.
One unique challenge? Preserving the home’s original Saltillo tile flooring, which continues throughout much of the house. Because the original tile was no longer available, Jennifer created detailed templates and worked closely with our construction team to reconfigure the layout while protecting as much of the existing floor as possible. With only a small reserve of extra tiles, every layout decision was carefully planned. The result feels seamless—and true to the home’s history and regional character.
Design Highlights
During the planning stage, Jennifer took the time to assess the homeowners’ actual kitchen items—everything from cookware and small appliances to daily vitamins—and designed the cabinetry around how they live. Every shelf and drawer was mapped with intention, maximizing storage without sacrificing aesthetics. This level of customization not only ensures a beautiful finished space, but also eliminates the frustration of figuring out where things go. It’s a rare and valuable part of our design process that brings clarity and ease to busy lives.
Focal Point: The Vent Hood
The custom copper vent hood—crafted from both polished and hammered matte finishes—is the centerpiece of the kitchen. Framed by deep cobalt cabinetry and patterned tile, it balances drama with warmth and ties into the rustic materials throughout the home.
Custom Bar Area
While the kitchen is designed first and foremost for cooking and gathering, we also carved out a refined bar space that adds both function and beauty. Slightly offset from the main workflow, this custom-built area features glass shelving, interior lighting, and a beverage center—making it easy to pour a drink or grab something cold without interrupting the chef.
What truly sets it apart is the smoky blue antiqued mirror backing—an absolutely unique finish that adds depth, mood, and just the right amount of shimmer. It reflects the surrounding textures in a subtle way and makes this quiet corner feel like a standout design moment within the larger space.
A Banquette That Opens Up the Room
Replacing a bulky table with a built-in banquette and oval table allowed for more space and better flow. The ivory upholstery, brass details, and pop of blue china give the area a soft focal point that draws you in from the entry.
Mixed Metals & Thoughtful Materials
This kitchen blends old-world character with a fresh edge—mixing stainless steel appliances with warm copper, soft gold, natural wood, and saturated blues. Quartz countertops provide durability, while curated hardware and lighting add depth and style.
A Working Pantry
In the new working pantry, complete with quartz counters, interior lighting, and built-in appliance storage, everything stays tucked away but ready to go—exactly what this busy kitchen needed.
Built Around the Way You Live
From the hand-applied stain on the custom island to the natural flow of light through the space, every detail in this kitchen was crafted with care. Some features—like the banquette seating—were brought to life by the homeowners themselves, while others were fully custom-built and installed by our team.
